…Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. ~ Mark 9:2-6

Often, after an experience of deep connection with the Father, on the heels of a poignant and sacred encounter, we want to race to action. The combustion in our soul fuels a desire to engage in activity.

Like Peter, we want to grab our tool box and build a tent… maybe three! Peter, in the midst of an awesome moment, during a momentary lapse in the divine conversation, fills the gap with the suggestion that he and his buddies get busy building something.

And the response to Peter’s poorly framed idea comes from God! Not from angels, not from the Old Testament prophets… not even from Jesus. Peter’s fumbling, mindless lob is returned with an overhead slam by God.

And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” ~ Mark 9: 7

“…listen to him.” Don’t talk, don’t build, don’t memorialize, don’t mobilize armies, don’t launch campaigns, don’t do… but listen.

God answered indeed.

The tendency of the human heart is to fill the womb of pregnant moments with activity. We construct when we should contemplate. We pound nails when we should ponder.

But God has different ideas… on the mountain top, and the in valley.

Listen.

Listen to Him.

Listen to His beloved, compassionate, powerful, tender, awesome, miraculous, humble, gentle, committed, sacrificial Son… our Savior.

Listen to Him.
